George Rodell Irons, 80, of Athens died Friday, March 12, 2010 at home.

He was born November 2, 1929, the son of Rodell and Genevieve (Mahieu ) Irons in Bloomingdale, Michigan.

George graduated from Athens High School in 1947 and owned and operated his own farm in Athens.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Vivian (Converse) Irons of Athens; children, Stephen (Nora) Irons , Barbara Korn and Michael (Melissa) Irons, all of Athens; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sisters, Jean Egolf of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Joan Martin of Burr Oak; special friends, Jon and Daphne Dolbee. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Rodney Irons and son in law Kenneth Korn.

George was a member of the Athens Community Association, Farm Bureau and Michigan Pork Association and a past member of the Athens School Board. He enjoyed fishing, wood crafting, snowmobiling and traveling.

The family will receive friends on Monday, March 15, 2010 from 1:00-3:00 and 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Shaw Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at North Athens Baptist Church with Pastor Marvin Savola officiating. Interment, Burr Oak Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Athens Community Foundation (PO Box 205, Athens, MI 49011) or Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund (200 E. Roosevelt, Battle Creek, MI 49017).
